Sandie Rudman, ELS Student Support Officer

The Division understands that students often have many concerns as they make the transition from school or elsewhere into university. Learning to adjust to university study and expectations, understanding how university administration operates, or even knowing what support is available can be very daunting as students commence their university life.

Once past the first year there are other issues that face students – such as are they in the right course, are they trying to combine too much paid work and study and a range of others.
Macquarie University strives to ensure that students get the best possible experience during their time here so a role such as the Student Support Officer is part of the team of people available to assist students achieve this.

As background for doing this role - I have a BSc and Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) from Macquarie and have worked as a research assistant and part time tutor in Biology at Macquarie. I have taught high school science and TESOL. For the past seven years I have worked in the Dean of Student's Office as Development and Research Officer of the Macquarie Transition Program. In this role I have organised university-wide Academic Orientation programs and developed a successful mentoring program and other strategies to support students in their first year of undergraduate study at Macquarie.
I hope that many of you will take the opportunity to talk to me about any issues you have related to your university issues. I currently work Thursday and Friday.
