It is becoming increasingly important for people in the workplace to constantly update their skills and knowledge. Information and communication technologies are making great impacts on the way we work and on formulating future plans in the workplace. Keeping up with the pace of change is an ongoing challenge. Postgraduate studies are one way of meeting this challenge. They also provide the opportunity for diversifying your workplace choices.
The Postgraduate Diploma of Museum Studies or a Masters of Museums Studies at Macquarie will provide you with an up-to-date background to areas of study relevant to contemporary museums, galleries and collections. As management of information is increasingly forming a vital part of the workplace of the future, this program will give you essential grounding in generic information management skills through integration with workplace practice.
The Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Museum Studies is available to students who already have an undergraduate degree in Museum Studies or have other undergraduate qualifications (usually a BA or BSc specialising in some aspect of object/materials curation in museums) and who wish to undertake a higher degree in the area of Museums Studies.
The postgraduate programs build on the “hands on” learning approach featured in the undergraduate program at Macquarie University. Students also undertake supervised project work where “learning by doing” is emphasised. In all units, students are encouraged to critically analyse the theoretical and practical aspects of museology. The principle aims of the programs are to equip students with the requisite skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the ever-changing needs of museums now and in the future.
A central plank of these programs is the professional internship. Students already employed in a museum can undertake an alternate program of coursework or an internship organised at an overseas museum. The postgraduate programs are co-ordinated by the Division of Environmental and Life Sciences and a Museums Program Committee is responsible for standards and professional benchmarking.
The program is designed to cater for the needs of both local and overseas students. Overseas students may complete either the entire program or a component of it in Australia. If the long semester break (Summer semester) is utilized for the internship portion of the program, it is possible to complete the MSc in 12 months rather than the projected 18 months.
