Post Graduate Certificate in Research Preparation (ELS)

All Masters by research programs in the sciences at Macquarie University are streamlined under the Master of Philosophy degree (MPhil). To enroll in this degree, students must have already successfully completed an Honours degree (Class 2) or have equivalent qualifications, such as demonstrated research experience or a satisfactorily completed Masters or postgraduate diploma including a research component worth 25 per cent of the program load and directly related to the acquisition of research skills.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation (ELS) provides another pathway into the MPhil for students with a Bachelor degree in science or a related discipline.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation consists of two units; Research Preparation (eight credit points) and Selected Coursework (four credit points). Enrolled students who complete these two units with a minimum of credit grades are eligible for admission into the MPhil program. The Certificate takes one semester full time or two semesters part time.

Course content

ELS 80X (Research Preparation); This is a major unit that prepares the student for post graduate research. A critical review and project proposal of 5,000 words and a seminar will result from this unit. The written work should be appropriate to either act as a Literature Review for a thesis or as material for use in Introductions to research papers.

Some Departments will have modules that fulfill part of the requirements of ELS 801. For example, GEOS 862 is offered in the Department of Physical Geography. It includes seminar and written components within the area of research being undertaken.

ELS 81X (Selected Coursework); A wide range of units is permissible. They will generally be 300-level or above and approved by the supervisor and Masters Coordinator. The units must enhance the candidate's knowledge in their field of study. In some cases, a readings unit might be undertaken but the subject area must diverge significantly from the subject of the research degree.

X = departmental code. Codes are :1 Biology; 3 Graduate School of the Environment; 5 Chemistry; 6 Chiropractic; 7 Human Geography; 8 Physical Geography; 9 Earth & Planetary Sciences.

Admission information

The first step is to find a research area in which you are interested and a staff member who is prepared to act as supervisor for your chosen topic. Information on the research undertaken by staff members in ELS is available at the Departmental web sites. During the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation the supervisor will advise you and guide you to the appropriate literature and development of the research approach.

Students can enroll in the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Preparation in either the first or second half of the year. Local students apply to Macquarie University directly. Application information and forms are available from http://www.postgradandbeyond.mq.edu.au/coursework/Apply.htm.

International students who are not permanent residents of Australia should apply to Macquarie International (+61 2 9850 7346 or iso@mq.edu.au ).
