Postgraduate Research - Student Roadmap

 

Student Life Essential Steps

  1. Application for Candidature and Scholarship
    Student to contact a potential supervisor and prepare a brief research proposal. View ELS Research Areas and Interests to identify research areas and associated staff.
    Fill out application forms and submit them to Higher Degree Research Unit (HDRU). Application forms and information are available from the HDRU web site.

  2. Enrolment
    Upon receiving an offer of candidature PhD students must enroll with HDRU.

  3. Macquarie University Induction Day
    Attendance at the Central Commencement Program is mandatory for all new postgraduate students. Students are notified by mail of the time and date of this session.

  4. Divisional Commencement Program
    This will be held once a semester. Attendance is compulsory for all new students.

  5. Postgraduate training courses
    From 2004 every student will undertake a mandatory postgraduate research training unit.
    For more information about these units, please contact your Department's postgraduate academic advisor.

  6. Research planning
    Students are required to develop a solid research plan that leads to the thesis and submit it to their Department's postgraduate academic advisor within 6 months. (Effective Full Time - EFT)

  7. Commencement Program Report
    The student progress in activities stated in points 5 & 6 is reported by the Postgraduate Research Administrator in the Commencement Program Report form. This form is submitted to HDRU within 6 months (EFT). HDRU will confirm the student's enrolment provided all ICS Commencement Program components have been completed (points 4, 5 and 6).

  8. Annual Progress Review
    The Department conducts this review every year, usually in September or October. This involves a seminar, a written document and an interview with a panel.

  9. Annual Report
    To be completed by the student and submitted to supervisor before the stated deadline.

  10. Nomination of thesis examiners
    The student and supervisor should nominate thesis examiners at least three months prior to thesis submission. The forms and information about the process can be obtained at www.ro.mq.edu.au/HDRU/thesis.htm

  11. Submission of thesis
    Student submits three bound copies of thesis for PhD and 2 bound copies for Masters to the Postgraduate Research Administrator together with Submission of Thesis and Certification forms. The forms and further information is available from the Higher Degree Research Unit web site.

  12. Thesis examiner reports
    HDRU may forward these reports to the supervisors and the student. When required, the student is to make revisions or corrections and return the revised copies to HDRU within the specified time frame.

  13. Graduation
    Well done!
